Apple Pie Biscuits: A Cozy, Handheld Twist on a Classic Dessert

  • Author: Patricia Walker

Description

These Apple Pie Biscuits are a delightful twist on a classic dessert. Flaky, buttery biscuits are filled with sweet, spiced apple filling, creating a handheld treat that tastes like a miniature apple pie. Perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert, they combine comforting flavors and a golden, tender texture that everyone will love.

Ingredients

  • All-Purpose Flour: Creates soft, tender biscuit dough. Substitute half with whole wheat flour for added fiber.

  • Baking Powder: Ensures the biscuits rise perfectly.

  • Salt: Enhances flavor and balances sweetness.

  • Unsalted Butter: Adds richness and flakiness. Coconut oil can be used for a lighter option.

  • Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the dough; reduce slightly for less sweetness.

  • Apples: Use firm varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for perfect texture.

  • Cinnamon: Provides warm, classic apple pie flavor.

  • Nutmeg: Adds depth and enhances spice complexity.

  • Brown Sugar: Gives the apple filling a rich, caramelized sweetness.

  • Lemon Juice: Balances sweetness and prevents apples from browning.

  • Milk or Cream: Adds moisture to the dough; plant-based milk works as well.

  • Powdered Sugar (Optional): For glaze, mix with milk for a sweet finishing touch.

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

Set the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.

Prepare the Biscuit Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold unsalted butter using a pastry cutter, fork, or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add milk or cream and stir until a soft dough forms. Avoid over-mixing to keep the biscuits tender. Keeping the butter cold creates flakier layers when baked.

Make the Apple Filling

Peel, core, and dice apples into small, uniform pieces. In a medium bowl, mix the apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Ensure all apple pieces are evenly coated. Use slightly firm apples that hold shape and release minimal juice during baking.

Assemble the Biscuits

Roll out the dough to ½ inch thickness. Use a round cutter to cut circles. Place a spoonful of apple filling on half the circles. Top with remaining dough circles and press edges with a fork to seal. Mini biscuits work for bite-sized treats, or make larger biscuits for a filling dessert.

Bake the Biscuits

Place biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space for expansion. Bake for 12–18 minutes until golden brown. Allow biscuits to cool slightly before serving.

Optional Glaze

Mix powdered sugar with a small amount of milk to create a drizzle. Apply over warm biscuits for a sweet, glossy finish.
